Page 1, Column 2Oscar A. Young died at his home in Eagle Grove, Iowa, March 13, 1928, at the age of 76 years. Mr. Young had been seriously ill for several months from heart disease
which caused his death.Oscar Young was born at Beaver Dam, Wis., August 29, 1851. He attended the common schools and finished his education at the academy there.
After his school life was over he worked in the pineries in northern Wisconsin and while there he learned much about the care of trees. In the following years of his life he had many opportunities to apply this knowledge. After leaving the pineries he took charge of two railroad-eating houses at Elroy and at Minnesota Junction, Wis.
In the early seventies and during the gold rush, he and some of his friends went to the Black Hills. While there he took a claim, but because of contracting the mountain fever he was forced to return home. Although this trip was full of hardships, it was one of the interesting events of his life.
He afterwards moved to Dixon, Ill., with his parents where he remained until 1882. He then moved to Eagle Grove and took charge of the Occidental hotel. During the early growth of the city, he was made park commissioner and his efforts were devoted to setting out trees in the parks of the city. He save his attention to each tree that it might be perfect in the future. No effort on his part was considered too great that this end might be attained and the trees themselves bear witness to this desire of his.
On June 22, 1891, he was united in marriage to Clara P. Filkins, and to this union one daughter, Margaret, was born.
The last few years of his life were spent in Almont. N. D., attending to his land interests there. He considered it a great privilege to use his time, energy, and money in building up the town and community in which he lived. He has left as a monument to his memory his outstanding characteristic—kindness to humanity.
Mr. Young is survived by his wife and one daughter, Margaret Z. Young, both of this city and also by two sisters, Miss Myra Young of Dixon, Ill., Mrs. Will Craney of Kenosha, Wis.; by two brothers, Thomas Young of Dixon, Charley Young of Luce, Minn.; a nephew, Oscar A. Young of Hening; Minn., a niece, Mrs. Jap Wells of Wadena, Minn., and a sister-in-law, Miss Fannie Filkins of Eagle Grove.
Funeral services were held in his home on March 16, at two o’clock. The sermon was preached by the Rev. Floyd D. Reeves of the Congregational church. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were his brother, Thomas, his two sisters, Miss Myra Young and Mrs. Will Craney, a cousin, Henry Newburry of Bristow, Iowa, two nephews, Douglas. C. and Daniel G. Filkins, and their mother, Mrs. Robert Norrish of Morrison, Ill.
