Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 am to 11 am prior to the services at the funeral home Saturday.

Verlyn Dean Boelman, the son of Harry and Luella (Dorenkamp) Boelman, was born February 21, 1951, in Mason City, IA. He attended Belmond Schools and graduated from Belmond High School in the Class of 1969. During his school years he was active in track. Following high school he attended NIACC in Mason City where he graduated in the automotive programs.

After college Verlyn was united in marriage to Rachel A. Kalkwarf, on June 27, 1970, at St. John Lutheran Church, Belmond. Their union was blessed with two sons, Lane and Reed. Following their marriage the couple started their family and lived in Belmond and Verlyn worked for North Iowa Woods for a time before moving to Marble Falls, TX, in 1981 where Verlyn accepted a management position with the O'Connor Goodyear Tire Co.. In addition to working for O'Connor Tire, Verlyn had owned and operated his owned construction business while in Texas.

Verlyn and Rachel truly relished their roles as parents to Lane and Reed and both took active roles in their upbringing. Rachel as their number one cheerleader and Verlyn as their dad and coach. He had coached many of their youth athletic teams over the years they lived in Texas.

Verlyn, Rachel and the boys returned to Belmond in 1989, where he has lived since. Upon returning to Belmond, Verlyn was employed at Golden Harvest and once again returned to the construction business owning Verlyn Boelman Construction for many years. He also worked for Abilene Machine until retiring to care for his wife Rachel in 2012.

Verlyn loved most anything that meant spending time in the outdoors. Be it the excitement of pursing the elusive White tails in an area timber, or the rush of a flushing Ring-necked rooster over his trusty side kick "Maggie".

Verlyn loved being a husband and father and absolutely relished the role of grandpa and spending times with his grandchildren. His grandchildren looked forward to visits and any occasions with "Papa V". He and Rachel were active members of the Belmond Country Club for many years. He was a past member of the Belmond Jaycee's and past president of the Marble Falls Youth Soccer Association.

Verlyn loved the open road and riding his Harley's with Rachel and his diverse group of friends. In recent years he enjoyed this passion and hobby with his companion Dorothy Neubauer. Verlyn and Dorothy appreciated one another's company following their shared losses of their life partners. He loved his Eagles and the music of the 60's, along with reading up on current events and keeping up on the world of agriculture. He was an avid Iowa Hawks fan and truly loved his times in Texas. In the last many years one might see Verlyn and "Maggie" tuling about the countryside in his old truck or "Yotas" looking for pheasants and checking the crops sharing a breakfast sandwich or a jerky stick. Anyone who crossed trails with Verlyn on his life journey will reflect on his unique and witty personality and "words of wisdom" or his opinion as only he could share them along with his one of a kind sense of humor and his "Heart of Gold" behind his bit of stubbornness. He was definitely a "free spirit."

Verlyn's memory will burn brightly in the hearts and minds of his sons, Lane Boelman, Austin, TX, and Reed (Anna) Boelman and their children Thomas Reed age 11, Joseph Verlyn age 7, and August Lee Boelman age 2, all of Redwing, MN; companion Dorothy Neubauer, Lake Mills, IA; brothers Alan (Vickie) Boelman, Algona, IA, and Arlyn (Ruth) Boelman, Johnston, IA; Boelman nephews and nieces: Mark, Dan, Karen, and Beth and Kalkwarf; Niece and nephew Jessica and Andy, along with other in laws, family and many friends and "Maggie". He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rachel on May 22, 2013, and mother and father-in-law Robert and Ilene Kalkwarf. Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond, Iowa;
