Walter Byron Hansen, 83, Moline, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island, Illinois. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Covenant Church, Moline, where he was a member. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, Silvis. Visitation is 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline. Memorials may be made to the church. Masonic services conducted by East Moline Lodge 969 AF&AM will be held at 7 tonight.
He was born June 28, 1914, in Cordova, the son of Peter Walter and Elizabeth Weaver Hansen. He married Bernice Mae Hoffman July 4, 1937, in Renwick, Iowa.
He retired in 1974 as a supervisor of specifications from John Deere Harvester Works in East Moline after 38 years of service. He was a member of East Moline Lodge 969 AF&AM Scottish Rite and Coordinate Bodies Valley of Moline. He was also a member of the Rose Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, where he was patron in 1973 and 1979. He enjoyed woodworking and giving his projects to others. He received a merit award for being a 50-year member of the Diabetes Foundation.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Larry Westmorland, Moline; a son and his wife, Gary L. and Pat Hansen, Moline; grandchildren, Timothy Hansen, Cincinnati, Ohio, Thomas Hansen, Minneapolis, Minn., Leslie White, Champaign, and Eric Westmorland, Rock Island; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Vera Manuel, Rock Island, and Roselind Lee, Kansas City, Mo. He was preceded by a son, Maurice.
