James R. Gillespie, 76, of Hillsdale died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with a Masonic Service at 6 p.m. at the Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Memorials may be made to the Association of Retarded Citizens, Rock Island or the Stewart Masonic Lodge, No. 92, Geneseo.

Mr. Gillespie was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Eddyville, Iowa, the son of C.M. and Amy Hoffman Gillespie. He married Betty Kelling on April 14, 1950, in Ames, Iowa. Mr. Gillespie had been a teacher in Clarion, Iowa, and United Community School, Ames, and Riverdale High School, Port Byron where he became the high school principal. He was also employed by the Illinois State School Board.

He was a member of the Stewart Masonic Lodge, No. 92, Geneseo, the Toastmaster's Club, the Phi Delta Phi and the Association of Retarded Citizens, Rock Island.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Colleen Gillespie, East Moline, Debra Gillespie, Belle Vista, Ark., and Juli Gillespie, Bettendorf; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Brenda Gillespie, Waco, Texas; grandsons, Dan and Justin Gillespie; a step granddaughter, Lisa Yose; a sister, Judi Squires. He was preceded in death by a son, James Robert Jr. in 1993.
