LaVaughn Bernice Spires, 75, Clarion , Iowa, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, at Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines. Services are 1:30 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, Clarion. Burial is in Evergreen Cemetery.

She was born July 25, 1921, in Clarion, to William and Jane Scheppler Claude. She married Clifford Spires Nov. 29, 1940, in Clarion. They lived in California where he was stationed during WWII. After the service they lived in Clarion, then Webster City and later in Moline. After his death she continued to live in Moline until entering the care center at Ankney.

Survivors include daughters, Sandra Swartz, Mesa, and Ellen Herchel, Des Moines; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilbur Claude, Clarion; and a sister, Gladys Ellis, St. Paul. She was preceded by a brother and three sisters.
