10 December 1862 ---- 12 April 1919

Thos. H. Griffin was born at Maconsville, Iowa, Dec. 10, 1862, and died April 12th, 1919, at St. Louis, Mo. His early life was spent at Winthrop and Iowa Falls. What schooling he received was by working for his board and attending winter school. On account of his limited education he was handicapped in life, therefore be decided that his children should have the best schooling that he could obtain for them.

Most of his life was spent in railroading. In the eighties he fired for the Illinois Central at LeMars, Iowa, at which place he met Isabelle Mimnaugh, to whom he was united in marriage in May 15, 1888. To this union four children were born, Leo who died in 1916, Thos. I , Catherine and Philip. In 1889 he went to Lake City and entered the employment of the C. & N. W. as fireman. He did not stay long at that place but returned to LeMars where he entered the hotel business, which business he followed for about eight years. About 1897 he came to Eagle Grove and entered the employment of the C. & N. W as switchman which position he worked at for about 17 years. About 4 years ago he went passenger braking which position he held up until Saturday, April 5th. Then he laid off with the expectation of resting and going to Hot Springs, Ark., for his health, as he had been complaining of kidney trouble for the past few months. He left Saturday afternoon for Des Moines to visit over Sunday with his sister, Mrs. Nora Corcoran. He did not leave Des Moines Sunday as he planned but waited until Tuesday night. He arrived in St. Louis Wednesday morning and went directly to the Portland Hotel to rest so that he could continue his journey the next day. The next day he was to weak to get up. So he called for a doctor. As he did not have a fever and his pulse and temperature were normal, the doctor treated him for kidneys. Friday morning a Catholic priest administered to him the last rites of the Catholic church. Another doctor was called on Friday. The doctor stayed with him most of the day and up to 10 o'clock Friday night his temperature, pulse and respiration were normal. Then temperature went to 104 degrees. He died Saturday morning at 2:20 a. m. about six hours before his son arrived in St. Louis.

The remains were brought here for burial. The funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Tuesday morning 9 a. m. Burial was in Calvary cemetery. Besides his wife and three children, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Carroll of Ft. Dodge and Mrs. Nora Corcoran of Des Moines, and one half brother, Ed Donahue of Rapid City, S. Dak. survive. The pallbearers were L. A. Bolan, John Callopy. John Kellor, Earl Wallin, Fred Stice and Frank Kubitschek. Those from out of town to attend the funeral were Mrs. Mary Carroll, Mr. T. J. Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Barrick of Fort Dodge; Mrs. Nora Corcoran and Mrs. Henry Corcoran of Des Moines, Mr. Mike Minnaugh of Jackson, Neb.
