WELL KNOWN COUNTY RESIDENT IS CALLED
Mrs. J. G. Mechem Passes Away At Her Home In Lincoln

Malinda Dawson, daughter of George and Rebecca Brewer Dawson, was born in Belmont county, Ohio, on the 26th day of July, 1837, and died at her home near Clarion on Sept. 29, 1923, being 86 years, 2 months and 3 days of age. She was the oldest of a family of eight children, four of whom survive her: Christopher and David Dawson of Shadyside, Ohio; Mrs. I. H. King of Goldfield and Milton Dawson of Belmond.

At the early age of fifteen she united with the Christian church in Belmont county, Ohio. After coming to Wright county she helped organize and was a charter member of the Church of Christ at Clarion and always took a leading part in all its activities until physically unable. Her heart and interests were always intensely centered in the church and its best welfare.

On November 20, 1856, she was united in marriage with John G. Mechem at Belmont Ridge, Ohio, and this coming November they would have celebrated their sixty - seventh wedding anniversary. They
were the parents of eight children, six sons and two daughters, one of whom was deceased at three years of age.

In 1866 Mr. and Mrs. Mechem came by covered wagon from Ohio to Cedar county, Iowa, and located on a farm near Clarence, where they lived for thirteen years. They then came overland to their farm south of Clarion, where they have since resided.

During the Civil war she lived on the border line, but amid all the hardships she kept her home and two babies secure in the absence of her husband in the service. Mother Mechem's pioneer experiences on the prairies seemed but to strengthen her in mind and body. Her love of home, church and family were the great issues of her life.

She is survived by her husband, John G. Mechem, six sons, Alre, Emmer, George, Frank, Homer, Arthur and one daughter, Mrs. Anna Nagle, all of whom live in and near Clarion and were with her in her last sickness. She is also survived by eighteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home, conducted by Rev. H. L. Lewis. The six sons acted as pallbearers. Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery.
