BRINGING G. CARLTON HERE FOR BURIAL

Former Eagle Grove Man and One Time Street Commissioner Died in Los Angeles Monday.

George Carlton formerly of Eagle Grove, died at Los Angeles Monday, March 26th. The remains will be brought to Eagle Grove for burial. The funeral services will be held in the Foll & Wilson Funeral parlors Friday afternoon commencing at 2 o’clock.

For many years Mr. Carlton was street commissioner for the city of Eagle Grove. About 17 years ago he moved to Ames. About four years ago he went with Mrs. Carlton to Oklahoma, and later, returned to Ames. They went to California to spend the winter right after Christmas. Mr. Carlton was born in Bath, Stueben [Steuben] county, New York, September 9, 1848. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Guy of Canada and Leroy of Chicago, and one daughter, Mrs. Albert Horns of Des Moines.

George Carlton Buried Friday

As announced the remains of the late George Carlton were being brought to Eagle Grove for burial. The funeral services were held in the Foll & Wilson undertaking parlors with Rev. Muhleman in charge and interment was in Rose Hill cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Carlton of Chicago and Mrs. A. Horns attended the funeral but Guy Carlton was unable to get here. The following obituary was read by Rev. Muhleman at the service.

Obituary

George Henry Carlton was born in Stueben [Steuben] county, N. Y., on Sept. 9, 1848. He remained here until in 1872. In 1867 he was united in marriage to Amelia Goltry. Three children were born to them. In 1872 the moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa, where Mrs. Carlton died in 1878. In 1882 he married Donna Goltry. She died three years later. In 1887 he was united in marriage to Hattie E. Vosburgh [Vosburg]. They moved to Eagle Grove, that year where they lived for 23 years. During his stay here he was for 17 years employed by the city of Eagle Grove as street commissioner and superintendent of water works. He originated Eagle Grove’s first fire department. He is also entitled to the honor of saving the water systems of this place.

In 1911 they moved to Ames where they stayed for 12 years then move to Eureka Springs, Ark., then to California where they have since lived.

Mr. Carlton died in California on March 26, 1928 at the age of 79 years, six months and 17 days. He is survived by his wife and three children. Leroy of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Albert Horns of Des Moines, and Guy H. of Almeda, Saskatuan [Saskatoon], Canada. For 49 years Mr. Carlton has been a member of the Masonic lodge.

He has been a member of the Methodist church since in 1907. He was a thorough and active Christian. While he lived here he was a member of the official board. He was an earnest and enthusiastic worker in the church and in his later days took a great deal of comfort in remembering the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

His body was brought to Eagle Grove for burial. The funeral services were held in the Foll & Wilson funeral parlors and the sermon was preached by Rev. W. G. Muhleman.
