Russell “Russ” Francis Martin, age 93, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Arthur and Barbara Genevieve (Miller) Martin on April 15, 1925, on the family farm in Clarion, Iowa. Russ graduated from Clarion High School in 1943.

On June 3, 1947, Russ was united in marriage with Maxine Farus at St. John’s Catholic Church in Clarion. To this union, six children were born, Tommee, Susee, Cindee, Sallee, Sandee and Tonee. They lived on a farm by Clarion from 1947 to 1969. Russ then moved his family to rural Clarksville. Russ launched his own business known as Martin Electric.

On May 18, 1978, Russ lost his beloved wife, Maxine. Russ later married Isabelle “Izzy” Bruhl on July 2, 1983. Russ and Izzy made their home in Clarksville. After his retirement, Russ continued his love for farming by purchasing land north of Clarksville.

Russ was a committed faith-based gentleman and attended daily services at both the Greene and Waverly Catholic Churches. In his retirement, Russ continued to serve his community and church even through the last week of his life. Russ was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He loved playing horseshoe and only became more competitive as he grew older, competing at the community, state and world levels. In 1999, he was inducted into the Iowa Horseshoe Pitching Hall of Fame. Russ was also President of the Iowa Horseshoe Pitching Association.

Russ died Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine and wife, Izzy; son, Tom Martin, great granddaughter, Lily Goodell; his parents; sister, Maxine Doughtery; and two brothers, Carroll “Bud” and Jack Martin.

Russ is survived by his children; Sue (Mike) Courts of Cedar Falls, Cindee (Craig) Nelson of Terril, Sallee Martin of Monticello, Sandee “Sam” (Tom) Clark of Clarksville, Tonee (Janelle) Martin of Winter, Wisconsin, and Darla (wife of Tom) Martin of Stanhope; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; sister, Tudy Falconer of Belmond and many nieces and nephews. Russ is also survived by Izzy’s daughters, Susan (Terry) Kaduce of Klemme, Patricia (Patrick) Gilles of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mary (Verlyn) Kaduce of Garner, Connie (Robert) Walker of Mason City and Jane Bruhn Follett of Clear Lake.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Greene. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday with public Rosary Service at 4:30 p.m. at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, Iowa. The family requests donations to Russell Martin Memorial Fund in lieu of flowers.
