Clarion Brakeman Killed at Oelwein

Herbert Eike of Clarion, a Chicago Great Western brakeman, was fatally injured in the yards at Oelwein Sunday night. He was hurt about 11 o’clock and died at 1 a. m. Monday. Both legs and an arm were cut off. Eike was married and is survived by his wife and two children. He formerly lived in Eagle Grove, being the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Eike. Mr. Eike conducted a small shoe repairing shop on the East Side. The details of the fatal accident are not available at this time. Eike was not on duty. It is assumed that he was enroute to his way car and perhaps endeavored to catch a ride on a passing train or was run down by a switch engine. The remains were held in Oelwein Monday for the coroner’s inquest.

Later: There were no witnesses to the accident and it will probably never be know how he was killed. Funeral services were held Wednesday and burial was in Rose Hill cemetery, Eagle Grove.
