Virtue Reynolds Baker

Virtue Reynolds was born Aug. 13, 1836, in Franklin county, Vermont. Part of her early childhood was spent in Canada. From there she moved back to Vermont and then to Stevenson county, Illinois.

On Oct. 12, 1853, she was united in marriage to Jacob W. Baker. To this union five children were born: Mrs. Sadie Gilley of Waterloo; Mrs. R. W. Comstock of Eagle Grove; George, of Waterloo; Heber and Edson, of Eagle Grove.

For a while Mr. and Mrs. Baker lived on a farm in Illinois. In 1867 they moved to Blackhawk county, Iowa, and settled on a farm near Raymond. In 1894 they moved to Wright county and purchased the farm east of town now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Comstock. In 1906 they retired from the farm and moved to Eagle Grove, where they lived till the death of Mr. Baker, which occurred May 10, 1920. Since then Mrs. Baker has lived with her son Ed at the Baker home on East Broadway.

On the evening of Dec. 19, 1922, Mrs. Baker quietly passed to her great reward while sitting in her chair with a number of her family present. At the time of her departure she was 86 years, 4 months and 6 days old.

Mrs. Baker has been a faithful member of the Methodist church for many years. She and her husband were members in Blackhawk county and transferred their membership to this place when they moved here. She has always been a worker in the Ladies' Aid and never ceased her interests in the activity of this organization. Only a few weeks ago she attended one of the suppers given in the basement of the church.

She leaves to mourn their loss the members of her family already mentioned, four grand children and many friends.

She has lived long and well, but our loved ones never grow so old that we do not miss them and grieve for them after they have gone. The family has the sympathy of the entire community.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Rev. W. G. Muhleman preached the funeral sermon. The body was laid to rest by the side of her husband's in Rose Hill cemetery.
