Raymond H. Mead, Sr., was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, on October 13, 1910, the son of Harry J. Mead and Julia Flower Mead. He attended Eagle Grove Community Schools and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1929. He was captain of the Eagle Grove High School football team while in high school. After graduation, he worked for the CCC's. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in February, 1941, and was honorably discharged in February, 1947. He was stationed aboard the battleship USS New York and the USS Fall River. He received several medals while in the Navy.

He married Susan P. Conti of Barrington, Rhode Island, on December 2, 1942 in New York City while serving in the Navy. Upon discharge from the Navy, he returned to Eagle Grove and attended Barber College in Des Moines. He owned and operated Mead's Barber Shop for 18 years. He was a police officer for Eagle Grove for 4 years. After this, he owned and operated The Easy Way Disposal for 7 years.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the Eagle Grove Country Club. He served as Country Club Vice President and was Country Club Champion in 1957 and 1970.

Raymond H. Mead, Sr., died on Monday, January 29, 1996, at his home in Eagle Grove. He was 85 years old. Survivors include his wife, Susan Mead, Eagle Grove; 1 son, Raymond H. Mead, Jr., Eagle Grove; and 2 daughters, Marion J. Studebaker, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Betty J. Mead, Eagle Grove; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Willard J. Mead.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 1, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eagle Grove, with Father Wayne Droessler officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 31, 1996, at Willim Funeral Home, Eagle Grove from 5 - 8 p.m. Vigil for the deceased will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Willim Funeral Home. Willim Funeral Home, Ltd., Eagle Grove is in charge of arrangements.
