VERONA W. UMTHUN

EAGLE GROVE, IA. —Services for Verona W. Umthun, 86, of Eagle Grove, who died of a heart ailment Thursday at the Rotary Ann Home here, will be 11 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was the widow of the late Steve Umthun, who founded Umthun Trucking Co. here in 1946. She had been a homemaker.

Survivors include four sons, Joseph, Virgil and Mark, all of Eagle Grove, and Frank of Mediapolis; six daughters, Generosa Benton and Bernadette Jorgenson, both of Omaha, Neb., Doreen Hauer, Mary Ann Powell and Donna Culmer, all of Eagle Grove, and Jane Umthun of Clear Lake; 31 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

VERONA WILHELMINA UMTHUN

Verona Wilhelmina Holtkamp was born May 16, 1901, at St. Paul, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mary Ostdick Holtkamp.

Verona graduated from St. James School at St. Paul. She was united in marriage to Stephen Umthun of St. Paul, Iowa on Nov 13,1923, at St. Paul. They farmed before moving to Eagle Grove, Iowa in 1944, where they operated the M & M Cafe until they cofounded the Umthun Trucking Co in 1946. Mr. Umthun died in 1971.

Verona continued to make her home in Eagle Grove until entering the Rotary Ann Retirement Home in January 1986, where she died on May 28, 1987, at the age of 86 years, and 12 days.

She is survived by four sons Joseph, Virgil, and Mark of Eagle Grove, and Frank of Mediapolis, Iowa; six daughters: Generosa Benton of Omaha, Neb., Dorene (Mrs. Arthur) Hauer, Eagle Grove, Mary Ann (Mrs Charles) Powell, Eagle Grove; Bernadette (Mrs. Darwin) Jorgenson, Omaha, Neb., Donna (Mrs Steve) Culmer, Eagle Grove; and Jane Umthun, Handicap Village, Clear Lake, Iowa. Also surviving are 31 grandchildren and 23 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers: Frank, Bernard, Henry, Joseph, Lawrence, Aloysius, Gerard, and Ernest, and four sisters Kathryn Holtkamp, Elizabeth Lampe, Mary Boding, and Nora Groene.

She was a faithful member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, was an active member of Catholic Daughters, Guild, Legion of Mary, Altar Society, Sewing Circle, Blue Army, American Legion Auxiliary, and nominated for Mother of the Year in 1959.

Catholic Daughters Rosary was recited at 4 p.m. Friday at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home. Scripture services were at 8 p. m. Friday night at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Verona Umthun were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 1987, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eagle Grove. Father John Herzog officiated and burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
