Sumner Byron Paine, son of Frank and Elizabeth Stevenson Paine, was born on a farm north of Eagle Grove on Oct. 16, 1894. He attended the rural schools and graduated from the Goldfield High School in the class of 1913. He farmed in Wright County.

He was married at Des Moines on March 23, 1935 to Marjorie Stanbury [Stansbury] of Farmington. The couple lived and farmed near Eagle Grove for many years and in 1961, they retired and moved into Eagle Grove. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and had served on various boards and committees of the church. He was a Past Master and 50-year member of the Bower Masonic Lodge; a Past Patron and 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star; a Past Watchman of Shepherds of the White Shrine and was a member of the Council and Chapter in Eagle Grove and the Mount Lebanon Council No. 61 in Clarion.

For the past six weeks, he had been a resident of the Clarion Care Center, and had been a patient at the Clarion Community Hospital for the past three days. He died at the hospital early Monday morning, Oct. 31, 1983 at the age of 89 years and 15 days.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Paine of Eagle Grove; his daughter, Marjorie and her husband, Rev. Byron Surface of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Charles Burks of Baton Rouge, La.; Tom Burks and Linda Kay Burks, both of Des Moines; two sisters, Myrtle, Mrs. Lester Gill of Tipton, Iowa; Amanda, Mrs. Everett Kennedy of Wadena, Minn.; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Middleton and four brothers, Lawrence, Homer, George and Leslie and a son-in-law, Philip Burks.

Funeral services for Sumner B. Paine, 89, of Eagle Grove, were held on Wednesday, Nov. 2,1983 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. Scott C. Hall officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Masonic services were held on Tuesday evening, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. by the officers and members of the Bower Masonic Lodge at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.
