Arlo J. Johnson, 88, of Cedar Falls, died on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at UnityPoint Health - Allen Hospital. He was born on August 20, 1930 in Thor, IA, son of Andrew Cornelius and Rachel Gertrude Winterton Johnson. He married Virginia Loynachan on June 6, 1954 at First United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Arlo graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1948 and from Eagle Grove Junior College. He attended Iowa State University and took a course from M.I.T. He was an airman in the US Navy. He was a tool designer for Schoitz Engineering for 45 years retiring in 1997.

He was a member of the Waterloo Art Association where he served as treasurer for eight years. He was a great, self-taught artist. His work was part of a guest artist display for two months at business in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, including John Deere PEC, Satori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Waterloo First United Methodist Church, the Cedar Falls Women’s Clubhouse, the Waterloo Art Association, and the National Bank of Waterloo. He placed in many art shows.

He was also a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed taking classes at the Waterloo Public Library with friends. He liked the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking, gardening, and tinkering with his machines but most of all his beloved farms.

Arlo is survived by his wife, Virginia Johnson of Cedar Falls; son, Scott Johnson of Waterloo; daughter, Jean Johnson of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Marc (Emma) Johnson‚ Collin Apling, and Chandler Apling‚ all of Waterloo; one great-grandchild, Estheriyah; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Marjorie Olsen, June Worsey, Lois (Smith) Johnson, and Wanda Willard.
