JOHN PENFIELD, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, DIES
Able to Attend Decoration Day Services, Died Five Days Later— Funeral Held Tuesday

John H. Penfield, one of three Clarion Civil war veterans who attended Decoration day services on
Monday of last week, answered taps at an early hour Saturday morning. While, during the year between the two preceding observances of Decoration day, not one name was added to the roll by the brave dead, was not long following the last observance until the community was called upon to mourn the passing of one of the veterans.

Mr. Penfield did not feel well Tuesday, but did not take to his bed until Thursday. He passed away at an early hour Saturday morning. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, O. M. Keyes. The service was attended by representatives of the patriotic bodies of the city and by a guard from the American Legion.

John Henry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Penfield, was born near Dixon, Ill., February 18, 1847, and
passed away quietly on the morning of June 4, 1927, age 80 years, 3 months, 16 days. Much of his early life up to the Civil war was spent in Allamakee County, Iowa. During the war he made three attempts to enlist, being successful in the third attempt at Dixon, Ill. He was about 17 years old when accepted. One of his great experiences in the army was when he made that great march with Gen. Sherman from Atlanta to the Sea. After the war he settled in Grundy county, Iowa, near Conrad. On April 18, 1871, Mr. Penfield was united in marriage to Mary Jane Ingham of Union, Iowa. To this union were born six sons, two of whom, Emmett and George, have preceded him into the great beyond. Mr. Penfield was one of the early settlers in Wright county, coming here with his family about 1880 and locating on a farm three miles south and one mile east of Clarion. About 23 years ago he moved into Clarion where he has made his home up to the time of his passing away. He was the Commander of the General Lyon Post G A R. He was buried with his Lord in Christian baptism by Evangelist Kemp in Lake Cornelia about 35 years ago, and has held fellowship in the Church of Christ from that day until called away to the land of endless day.

He leaves to mourn his loss his faithful and loving wife, four sons Emil of Liscomb, Iowa, Byron of Lemon, South Dakota, Glen of Breckenridge. Minn., and Lute of Clarion, and by one sister, Mrs. Jennie Douglas of Los Angeles, Cal., ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren. One of these, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hastie of Kenosha, Wis. is here with her parents. Those attending the funeral services Tuesday from a distance were L. S. Ingham and wife of Marshalltown, Jesse Ingham, wife and family and C. Collins and wife of Swaledale; Geo Day and wife and a son and wife of Sheffield; Thos Moore and wife and C. Ingham and wife of Whitten; Guy VanVorhies, wife and family and W. O VanVorhies and wife of Liscomb; W. M. Heizerling and wife of Manly.

Card of thanks — We wish to express our gratitude to the friends and neighbors and to the Legion for
the many acts of kindness and for the beautiful service in which we laid our husband and father in his lasting resting place. Everything you did was deeply appreciated. Mrs. J. H. Penfield and sons
