Mabel Lillian Roseland was born February 5, 1895, the daughter of Nels and Ragna Amundson Roseland, at Eagle Grove. She attended a rural Eagle Grove school and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1913. She received her B.A. and Master of Music degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Oberlin, Ohio. Following her schooling, she was fortunate enough to have studied privately under many notable musicians including Ernest Hutcheson in Chautauqua Lake, N.Y.; Robert Casadesus in New Port, Rhode Island; and Carl Frieburg at the Julliard School of Music, New York City, N.Y. Her studies have also carried her abroad to study the teachings of Isador Philip in France. She had eight seasons of Lyceum work as piano soloist, and taught college music for four years. She was the head of the piano, organ, and theory departments at Louisburg College, Louisburg, N.C. and Parsons College, Fairfield. She came to Benson in 1929, at which time she opened a studio for lessons in piano and organ. She was organist at the Plymouth Congregational Church, and served for a time as choir director. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists.

When she retired, she returned to Eagle Grove, and renewed her membership in the Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1983, she moved to Osage to live with Helen and Jim Budd, later moving to the nursing home. Mabel Lillian Roseland died December 12, 1991, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage, at the age of 96 years, 10 months, and seven days. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Nels O. and an infant brother, Arthur; three sisters, Helen Newman, Severina Olson and Ida Roseland. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. James (Helen) Budd of Osage; a nephew, Norris Olson, Eagle Grove and other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held December 16 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove, with
the Rev. Lyle Peters officiating at the 2 p.m. services. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Kastler-Babcock Services were in charge of arrangements.
