Alvin E. Peterson, 78, of Battle Lake, Minnesota died Thursday, April 29, 1999 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. He was born July 7, 1920 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota the son of David and Hulda (Enquist) Peterson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Augustana Lutheran Church and graduated from Fergus Falls High School. He attended Augustana College in Rock Island, IL.

On August 9, 1942 he married Ione Listrom at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd. He entered the U.S. Air Force on August 19, 1942 and served as an Aerial Radio Operator in a Troop Carrier Squadron for 28 months in the African and European Theaters. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 61st Troop Carrier Group of the 15th Troop Carrier Squadron and earned three air medals.

He and Ione owned a department store in Clarion, Iowa and later he worked in wholesale fabric sales. For eight years prior to retirement, they were counselors in a group home for mentally handicapped adults in Bloomington.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Marvin and Byron. Surviving is his wife, two daughters, Pam (David) Miller of Virginia, Illinois; and Sheryl (Frank) Couglin of Avon Lake, Ohio, one son, John (Diane) Peterson of Crosby; six grandchildren, Brent (Lori) Long, Lisa (Tony) Brunker, Kory (Denise) Long, Tana (Chris) Meyer, Kelly and Shea Coughlin, 7 great grandchildren, Alex, Taylor, Haley, Jordan, Andy, Kayla and David; Brother: Gordon of Mentor, a sister-in-law Marge Peterson of Wheaton.

Visitation: Sunday, 4 to 8 p.m. at Nilson Funeral Home, Battle Lake and one hour prior to service in church. Service: 11 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Battle Lake; Clergy: Rev. George Dahl.
Burial: Leaf Mountain Cemetery; Funeral Home: Glende Johnson Nelson & Nilson Funeral Home, Battle Lake.
