Henry E. Sammons, 74, of rural Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, December 18, 2014 at his residence.
A funeral service for Henry Sammons will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 22 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. Pastor Guy Sammons will officiate. Burial will be in the White Oak Cemetery, rural Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 1-9 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 PM Sunday evening.

Henry Edward Sammons was born April 3, 1940 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of Clarence and Irma Edith (nee Lee) Sammons. Henry attended school in Mt. Pleasant. On August 16, 1958 at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant, Henry was united in marriage to Ramona Ruth Moorehead. Mrs. Sammons died Monday, August 2, 2010 at their residence in rural Mt. Pleasant.

Henry was a maintenance man and mechanic for several area companies. He began as a mechanic for a local Co-op, and moved to the maintenance department of Ceco Building Systems. He returned to the mechanics profession, primarily in diesel mechanics. He worked for the Ruan-Sanders-Leaseway System, and then Centre State International, working on trucks and school buses. He completed his mechanic profession at Umthun Trucking [of Eagle Grove] in Mediapolis, retiring in 2003. Henry had previously worked in the laundry of the Mt. Pleasant Mental Health Institute, and was also engaged in jobs outside of his profession He had been involved in the construction of the Red Rock Dam near Pella. He built sidewalks and roofed buildings. For several years alongside of his mechanic work, Henry was involved in the maintenance of Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, of which his father-in-law was the sexton for many years. Henry also dabbled in farming, worked at Sammons Tree Service and was a car and motorcycle mechanic at his home.

Mr. Sammons was a member of the Moose Lodge and belonged to several bowling and pool leagues. He enjoyed square dancing with his wife, He liked to engage in woodworking. After his retirement, he enjoyed scrapping and recycling (junking).

Those thankful for sharing in Henry’s life include his four children: Ray Sammons and fiancée Vonda Jensen of Mt. Pleasant, Tanya Munyon and husband Al of Fairfield, IA, Reva Wittstock and husband Brad of Arbela, MO and Theresa DeMeyer and husband Jim of Mt. Pleasant; 2 brothers – Dennis Sammons and wife Georgia of Rome, IA and Guy Sammons and wife Diane of Mt. Pleasant; 2 sisters – Esta Ferguson and Rosie Wiggins, both of Mt. Pleasant; a sister-in-law, Retha Sammons of Salem, IA; 15 grandchildren – Craig, Tina, Shawn, Geri, Tia, LaDica, Carl, Traci, Ashley, James, Shawn, Shanon, Skye, Oshyn and Medow and 19 great grandchildren – Karli, Kwayde, McKenna, Payton, Luke, Blake, Shawn, Emma, Miah, Jentzen, Wesley, Kaiden, Summer, Josh, Kyle, Devon, Ian, Charlie and Logan. His parents, wife, 2 brothers – Don & Darrel Sammons and 1 grandson, Bryan Michael Sammons precede Henry in death.
