Lloyd Wayne Hill

Lloyd W. Hill, 77, of Clarion passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion. Memorial services for Lloyd Hill will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 201 3rd Avenue North East in Clarion, with Reverend Mike Gudka officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.

Lloyd Wayne, son of Lloyd Sr. and Josephine (McQuaid) Hill, was born on February 17, 1941 in Davenport, Iowa. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1959, and then attended several schools to further his education through the years. These schools included St. Ambrose University and Moline Community College, where he enrolled in accounting, business law and administration courses; Henry Ford College of Religion in Colorado, where he obtained his Psychology and ministry doctorate degree, and Ashworth College in Georgia for Paralegal Studies. Lloyd spent several years teaching and counseling youth, and was also a family and marriage counselor. For a time, Lloyd worked as wedding and graduation photographer.

On June 8, 1968, Lloyd was united in marriage to Karen Oleson of Dows at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport, Iowa. Lloyd and Karen lived in many places throughout their life, including Davenport, Denver, Colorado (where they spent most of their lives together), Des Moines, and Clarion. Together they enjoyed spending time with their friends and trips to the mountains, walking their dogs, and providing a food ministry with Gateway Christian Church in Aurora, Colorado. They also served their church by creating the weekly church sign and changed the phrase every week for four years. Together, they also were foster parents of seven children, who ranged in age from 2 ½ to 17 years.

Lloyd had a way with words; he was a very talented writer. On October 21, 2004, Lloyd was struck by a car while in a crosswalk, and their lives changed forever. He sustained massive head, right arm, hand, back, and right foot injuries. Cancer was found in 2007, and by 2014 it had spread from the esophagus to his liver, lungs, and stomach. He fought a long, hard battle. The last month of Lloyd’s life was a struggle, but despite the pain, he never complained. Through the journey, he would remain faithful and would say, ‘GOD IS GOOD, GOD IS GOOD!’

Lloyd is survived by his wife Karen Hill of Clarion; niece Lynn and family of North Carolina, niece Stacy and family of Iowa, and numerous cousins in North Carolina and South Dakota. Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Patricia and Jo Elaine, and several aunts and uncles.
