Ettna V. Van Olst passed away on January 24, 2001, at a local convalescent home in Santa Cruz. She was 99. Ettna was born and raised in Eagle Grove, Iowa. After her high school graduation she completed the two year college program at Ward-Belmont in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1921. She returned to Iowa and began her teaching career. During the next forty years she would spend twenty-five years teaching junior high students in various Iowa schools. She was a much loved and admired teacher. In 1929 she married Richard F. Vanderstoep. She moved to Santa Cruz after his death in 1964. In 1975 she married Egbert H. Van Olst. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Cruz and served as a Deacon. Ettna was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed being with people, entertaining, traveling, and playing bridge.
She is survived by her daughter, Marietta Robinson, and her son-in-law, Norman Robinson, of Santa Cruz and her grandchildren, Richard Robinson and John Robinson of Santa Cruz, Jane Hagenau of San Carlos, and Susan Leonetti of Santa Cruz and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by eight step-grandchildren and their descendants and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Egbert, in 1986, and also by her parents, her three brothers and their wives, and a grandson. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 350 Mission, Santa Cruz, with the Reverend John Aker officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions are preferred to the First Presbyterian Church or your favorite charity. Arrangements are by Norman's Family Chapel. Interment will take place later at Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove, Iowa.
