Funeral services for Richard F. Vanderstoep, ,71, of Spirit Lake, were held here Wednesday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock in the First Methodist church with Rev. Lyle Lieder officiating.

Mr. Vanderstoep, husband of the former Ettna Christensen of Eagle Grove, died Sunday night in the Dickinson County Memorial hospital at Spirit Lake following a heart attack. He had been in the hospital less than a week.

Mr. Vanderstoep is survived by his wife and one daughter Marietta, Mrs. Norman Robinson, of Santa Cruz, Calif., three grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Vos of Rock Rapids and Mrs. George Vettor of Estherville. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters and one grandson.

Richard Vanderstoep was born at Orange City, June 5, 1893 and his parents were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vanderstoep. He attended the State University of Iowa where he received the B.A. and M.A. degrees. He served for 39 years teaching and in administrative work in the Iowa Public School system and retired in May of 1961.

For the past three years Mr. and Mrs. Vanderstoep had spent the summer months at their Spirit Lake home and the winters in California where their son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. Norman Robinson, live at Santa Cruz.

He was a World War I veteran and served for three years as Field Director with the American Red Cross at Chanute Field, Ill., during World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Knights Templar, Elks and American Legion.
