Robert Edward Rice, age 92, of Janesville, Iowa, died on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at Denver Sunset Home in Denver, Iowa.

Robert was born on April 12, 1926, in Clarion, Iowa, the son of Oscar G. and Melinda A. (Musfelt) Rice. Bob attended the Clarion school system, graduating in 1944, from the Clarion High School. On May 26, 1944, Bob entered the U.S. Navy during WWII. While in the service, he served as a storekeeper, and Bob was honorably discharged on May 16, 1946. Bob returned home and took some time off before attending Iowa State Teachers College (U.N.I.) in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for three years. On April 7, 1950, he was united in marriage to Velma G. Ters at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home on eight acres in the Huber Addition, Janesville. Bob went to work for eighteen years at Rath Packing in Waterloo as a supervisor and then spent twenty-two years as a clerk with John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo, retiring in 1987. In 2009, Bob and Velma moved to the new home on Pine Street in Janesville.

Bob was an active member of the Janesville United Methodist Church and in his spare time enjoyed golf, bowling, lawn mowing, and traveling with Velma. Bob had a passion for the old steam engine trains. He was a seventy plus year member of the Clarion American Legion Post.

Bob’s memory is honored by: his wife, Velma Rice of Janesville; two daughters, Diane Lea (Lon) Brewer of Clive, Iowa, Lynn Ann Loyet (Dana Hanson) of Des Moines, Iowa; one granddaughter, Mackenzie Marie Loyet of Illinois, and his special nephew, Dennis Hielen and family. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Harriet.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 16, at Janesville United Methodist Church where the family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 16, at the Janesville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mike Carey officiating. Burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion, Iowa, with military honor’s conducted by the Clarion American Legion Post. Memorials may be directed to either United Methodist Church of Janesville or Dollars for Scholars. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly is assisting the family.
