Betty E. Conner, 93, died Oct. 10, 2018 in Longview, TX. A celebration of life was held Oct. 20 at Emmanuel Baptist Church Chapel in Alexandria, LA.
Betty Elaine was born Dec. 30, 1924 in Junction City, KS to Martin Luther and Olive Virginia Proeger. Her siblings were Luther, Linden and Shirley. She was an Iowa farm girl during the Depression who aspired to greater things. When she lived in Belmond, Betty was voted Miss Belmond and represented the town at the 1941 North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City. She was a member of the Class of 1942.
Betty graduated from Iowa State College in 1946 where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority and where she met Albert Leonard Conner. They married Feb. 16, 1946. The couple moved fairly often and had three sons in three states. They finally settled in Alexandria. It was there that Betty learned to paint. She had such an appreciation for the beauty around her and had a gift for putting it on canvas. She also had a love for antique dolls and was a member of the Cenla Doll Club. She was active with the AAUW, enjoyed her bridge club, and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. She made lots of friends and missed them when she moved to Longview in 2017.
She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter-in-law Ellen Conner; grandson Alan Conner; brother Luther Proeger; and sister Shirley Plagge. She is survived by her sons Steve of Friendswood, TX, Greg of Alexandria, and Marty (Debbie) of Longview; grandchildren Vickie Jo (Doyle) Johnson, Laura White, Kayla (Andrew) Cantey, and Trey (Emily) Conner, four great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and brother Linden Proeger.
