Obituary

Eliza Ellen Essex was born November 13, 1837, in Knox County, Illinois were she made her home until her marriage to W. H. McVicker April 5th, 1860. To this union three children were born, Alice (Mrs. M. M. Pattison of Des Moines); C. R. McVicker, deceased, and Edgar of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1863 Mr. McVicker entered the union army and was with Sherman in the historic march to the sea. While he was away Mrs. McVicker farmed their Illinois farm with the help of one of Mr McVicker's younger brothers. In 1883 the McVickers moved to Wright County, Iowa and settled on their fine farm southwest of Eagle Grove. Fifteen years ago they moved to Eagle Grove and Mrs. McVicker continued to live in their south Iowa Avenue home until the time of her death. On April 5th, 1910 Mr. and Mrs. McVicker celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at which all their children and grandchildren were present except one son, Edgar. That was a forceful reminder of the great changes in material conditions since their marriage 50 years ago. All the guests rode in their wedding in farm lumber wagons, not a buggy in the line, while at their golden wedding the guests came in autos costing from $1,000 to $3,000. Mrs. McVicker was a loyal and faithful member of the M. E. church. She was a friend of everyone and the entire community feels in her death the loss of a person friend. We join in extending the sorrowing relatives their sincere sympathy.
