August 20, 1936 ---- September 2, 2018

Mary Ann Johnson, age 82, of Lake Mills, died on Sunday, September 02, 2018, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Mary Ann (Cleven) Johnson was born on August 20, 1936, to Reinhardt and Luvina (Herfendal) Cleven in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Raised on a farm near Scarville, she graduated from Scarville High School. Next, she went on to Luther College in Decorah to earn a teaching certificate. Soon afterwards, she took a job teaching in Clarion, Iowa.

Mary Ann met Neal Johnson from Thompson, Iowa, and the two married on June 29, 1957, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville. They, then, made their home farming south of Thompson until mid-1960. Later, however, they moved to their Vinje farm where Mary Ann remained until 1994 at which time she moved into Lake Mills.

A farm wife, mother, and home maker, Mary Ann enjoyed quilting, crafting, sewing, traveling, and socializing with friends and family. She took great pride in her role as a 4-H leader, knowing the values she could instill in that capacity in her children would prove beneficial as they grew into young adults. More than willing to help plan Scarville High School reunions, very active with the Lake Mills Senior Citizens, and a 4-H supporter even after her kids left home, she loved visiting over a quilt with her best friends.

She is survived by her four children: Elizabeth VerHoef, of Thompson, Iowa, Beverly Sackitey, of West Chester, Pennsylvania, Amy (Graden) Thompson, of Pacific, Missouri, and Norman Johnson, of Kansas City, Missouri; four grandchildren: Susan (Eric) Thoreson, Gregg (Sara) VerHoef, Jostten Sackitey, and Okoteh Sackitey; and six great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Kassandra, Corey and Makayla Thoreson, and Preston and Hayden VerHoef; as well as by nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Those preceding her in death include her parents and her husband, Neal, in September of 1990.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje (rural Scarville, Iowa) with Vickie Zobel officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, September 8, 2018, from 1:00 PM until the service time at the church.
