Elizabeth "Betty" Ruth Lorentz, age 88, of Wadena, and formerly of Eagle Bend, passed away January 28, 2008, at Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena, Minnesota. She was born to Valentine and Henrietta (Lantzky) Carkhuff in Iowa Falls, IA. on January 28, 1920. Betty was united in marriage with Michael Raymond Lorentz on September, 15, 1943 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in San Diego, CA. Mike's shipmates served as bridesmaids and groomsmen for the couple at their wedding. Betty taught at country schools for the Wadena and Eagle Bend School Districts. She retired in 1971 after 26 years of teaching at the Eagle Bend Public School. She was a member of the American Legion, Wadena Elks Club and a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary. Betty enjoyed fishing, crocheting, needlework, gardening, and feeding and watching wildlife.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband in 1985; her parents; son Louis, and 4 infant sons; brothers Harry, Ben, Lester, Ray and Francis; sister Freda; and several in-laws. She is survived by sons George of Ottertail, Joe (Sue) of Eagle Bend, Dan (Pat) of Wadena, Brad of Lakewood, CO., and Gabe of Kalispell, MT.; daughters Michele (Charlie) DeBlieck of Manchester, IA., Pat Kirikiti of Austin, TX., and Becky (John) Walker of Baxter; 27 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren; and brother Vernon of Nebraska. Pallbearers will be Steven Lorentz, Angela Hunter, Robert C. DeBlieck, Dawn Ertl, Ivan Lee Lorentz, Bryan M. Walker, Michael Raymond Lorentz, and Jacob Lorentz.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wadena, with Father Donald Wagner and, her nephew, Father Tom Carkhuff as celebrants. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Clarissa, Minnesota.
