Philip Mayo, the son of Percy P.B., and Eloise (Cronenberg) Mayo, was born March 18, 1940, in Ashville, NC. At an early age he and his family lived in several different places. Phil attended high school in Roanoke, VA, where he graduated with the Class of 1958. During his school years he had played the trombone and participated in little league baseball and dabbled in football. His main life passion for building a flying model aircraft commenced in his earlier years and continued throughout his life. He had built many flying model airplanes and been a member of various aircraft clubs flying his extensive collection of planes around the states.

Following his schooling Philip was inducted into the United States Airforce at Lowry Air Base, Denver, CO. During his military Phil specialized in electronics and spent parts of his tenure working on Delta 106 Fighter planes. During his Air Force years he had also spent time in Washington, D.C.. While in the service he met his future wife and life partner Cynthia Baker in Colorado Springs at a Presbyterian Youth Gathering. The two were later married on August 19, 1962 at the United Methodist Church, Clarion, IA.

Following their marriage Phil and Cindy moved to Dover, DE, where their first son Jody was born in 1963. Phil commenced a life long career which brought 28 different stops along the career path for his family. Most of his professional years were in the nuclear and coal fire power plant industry as a purchasing agent initially with Raytheon Corporation/United Engineers Aerospace. Following a period of time in Dover the family moved to Richmond, VA, where second son John was brought into the family in 1968 and then they lived for a time in Erie, Ill, where the family became complete with the addition of third son Eric in 1971. Phil's career again brought many new adventures for the family as they made numerous homes in Waldorf, MD, Richland, WA, New Mexico, Iowa, Smith Mountain Lake, Tennessee, and then a return back to Iowa where they have lived for the past 19 years. Upon finally settling in Belmond, IA, Phil and is family owned and operated Belmond Building Supply until 2011.

Phil enjoyed anything that involved his children and grandchildren. When his son's were young he coached many of their ball teams. He and Cindy looked forward to attending and cheering their sons on in whatever activity that they were involved in. They continued their enthusiasm and interest in their grand kids lives as well. Phil and Cindy and the kids looked forward to family vacations many of which evolved as an off shoot of their many different moves. They have seen a great majority of the U.S., as well as been on travels to Jamaica. They loved to camp and had been a part of numerous camping clubs and groups throughout the years and the country. Over the years the couple spent 11 years wintering in their motorhomes at Highland Retreat, Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Phil enjoyed people watching, reading magazines on model airplane, motorhomes, and of course woodworking which he also had very well honed skills and created many meticulously handcrafted items. He loved to people watch and enjoyed the solitude of relaxing beside a campfire. Family, faith and friends were all important in his life. He had been active in his church and his community. During their years in Belmond Phil served on the Chamber, Belmond Industrial Development Corp., and various other positions, as well as volunteering his time and talents along side his family to various community festivals and other events. Phil was also known to be a fan of the Crimson Tide football team. He will be remembered as a family man, a bit on the stubborn side at times, with a sharp mind, who could formulate and fix nearly anything.

His memory will live on in the hearts and minds of his wife of 56 years Cindy Mayo, Belmond, IA, son-Jody (companion Kim Ausborn), Belmond, and his children: Nikki (Jason) Meyer and their son Gunner, Belmond, IA, Andrew Mayo (Companion Stephanie Fatland), Hampton, IA, and Corbin Mayo, Disapunta, VA; son-John Mayo companion Marni Roth), Belmond, IA, and his children Greg Collins (Companion Chandal Geerdes), Cedar Rapids, IA, and Ashlyn Mayo, Ankeny, IA; and son-Eric (Christine) Mayo, Belmond, IA and their daughters Victoria Mayo, Richmond, VA and Cailee Henning, Belmond, IA; a brother (Richard (Dick) Mayo and wife Sara Page, Keswick, VA; as well as other extended family and friends.
