Anna Wergeland

Anna Bergland was born August 29, 1892, the daughter of Chris and Sarah Bergland in Illinois. As a child, Anna and her family moved to a farm near Hardy. She also attended country school near Hardy. Anna was united in marriage to Lewis Wergeland Sr. on June 6, 1912, in Des Moines. The couple had lived in the Goldfield and Hardv areas before spending the majority of their married life
on a farm near Thor. In 1949, the Wergeland family moved into Thor. Lewis Sr. died in 1967. Anna continued living in the home until March 10, 1988, when she moved to the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove. She had been a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hardy, before joining Ullensvang Lutheran Church in the early 1940's. She had been active in the women's circles and Ullensvang Lutheran Church Women.

Anna Wergeland died May 23, 1989, in the early morning at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove at the age of 96 years, eight months, and 24 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Alyce Brown; two brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by three sons, Carrold, Humboldt; Glenn, Thor; and Lewis, Jr. of Eagle Grove; one daughter, Mrs. John (Lucille) Carter, Thor; three sisters, Bertha Clark, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Lloyd (Stella) Nelson, California; and Isabelle McLaughlin of California; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. May 25 at the Thor Lutheran Church, Thor, Iowa, with the Rev. John Sersland officiating. Burial was in North Lawn Cemetery, Fort Dodge.
