Betty J. Mathews, 95, of Belmond, IA, mother of Janet Jeffers and Judy Castelein, both of Belmond, died February 13, 2018, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Memorial services will be Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 1 PM at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st Street S.E., Belmond. The Reverend Leila Blackburn will be officiating. Interment will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery east of Goodell, IA. Visitation will be from noon until the time of the services Saturday.

Betty Benfield, the daughter of Canie and Sadie (Hammerick) Benfield, was born February 20, 1922. She attended school in Battle Creek, MI. Betty was united in marriage to Allen James Mathews and their union was blessed with Janet and Judy. Allen preceded her in death on January 28, 1998.

Betty moved to Goodell, IA, in August 2005 from Battle Creek, MI, to be near her daughters. She enjoyed planting flowers each year and the loving companionship of her little dog, Angel. Betty loved family gatherings and watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up. She was fortunate enough to be able to see her great grandchildren.

Betty most recently had resided at the Rehabilitation Center where she enjoyed activities and keeping the staff on their toes with her small stature, her wit and feisty zest for life. Betty truly enjoyed the simple things in life.

Left to cherish Betty's memory are daughters, Janet (Dale) Jeffers and Judy (Dewey) Castelein, all of Belmond, IA,; grandchildren: Martin (Susan) Jeffers, Mark Jeffers, and Melissa Severson; and her grandson-in-law, Darvin Peters. Also her great grandchildren: Andrew (Megan) Tillman, Benjamin Jeffers, Hunter Jeffers, Chelsea Jeffers, Michelle Jeffers, Josh Peters, Jamie Peters; and great-great grandchildren: Aubrey Tillman, Levi Tillman, Ben Jeffers, Nikoli Jeffers; a sister, Shirley Rocko and brother Ben Benfield. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Canie and Sadie Benfield, husband Allen J. Mathews, granddaughter, Tracy Lyn Peters, and a brother, Vernon Benfield.
