Philip Charles Espeland was born on April 4, 1949, the son of Porter George and Maxine Lucille Wentzel Espeland at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He received his education in the Eagle Grove School System and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1967. After his graduation, he furthered his education, receiving his associates degree at the Eagle Grove Campus of Iowa Central Community College. He was united in marriage to Lynette Mersch of Eagle Grove on April 24, 1971, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove.

He began his employment with Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in Eagle Grove. After many years with C & NW, he left the company and took a job as insurance adjuster for Life Investors Insurance Company in Kirksville, Missouri. He relocated to Harlan where he was employed with Fire and Casualty and later with General Casualty Insurance. In 1992, he accepted a job as machinist with Berkley Industries in Spirit Lake.

Philip Charles Espeland died on July 9, 1995 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. He had attained the age of 46 years, 3 months and 8 days. He is survived by two sons, Keith Espeland and wife, Jodi, Des Moines, and David Espeland, Hartley, Iowa; brother, Porter Espeland, Jr. of Cedar Falls; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father in 1982 and his mother in 1995.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 13, 1995, at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with the Reverend Omar Pettersen officiating the 2 p.m. service. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove, Iowa. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
