Chloe Sheakley, 85, of Algona, and Phoenix, Ariz., died Friday, May 4, 2018, in Phoenix, after battling leukemia. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 12, at the First Lutheran Church in Algona with the Rev. David Grindberg officiating. Viewing will be held at the church at 10 a.m., with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m. The Lentz Funeral Home in Algona is serving the family.
Chloe was born to Clare and Helen Chittenden on Feb. 7, 1933, in Des Moines. Growing up she was a member of the Mariner Girl Scouts and graduated from Des Moines Roosevelt High School in 1951. Chloe continued her education at Iowa State University and pledged the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. There she met her husband, Charles Sheakley, and they were married in 1952. Both graduated from Iowa State University in 1955. They moved to Minneapolis, Minn., after graduation, Rapid City, S.D., after that and then to Algona, in 1962. Chloe and Chuck were both only children and raised six wonderful children. Family was very important to both and they were hard workers.
Chloe and Chuck opened Sheakley's Ready to Wear in Algona in 1962. The women's and children's clothing store was open from 1962 to 1979. They then partnered with Merle Been to start Farm and Home Publishers in Belmond, in 1981 and a few years later, City Directory Inc. Chloe and Chuck split time in their later years between their houses in Algona and Phoenix.
Chloe is survived by her husband, Charles; four children: Kristi Sheakley of Phoenix, Ed Sheakley (Sheila) of Oklahoma City, Okla., Clare Bunnell (Steve) of Dallas, Texas, Cliff Sheakley (Laurie) of Clear Lake; grandchildren: Justin Sheakley (Janae), Stephanie McNamara (Mitch), Gavin Sheakley (Avery), Brett Honn (Jenni), Lucas Honn; and great-grandchildren: Teagan McNamara, Kennedy and Khloe Sheakley, Noah and Kyler Honn. Her parents and two daughters, Cindy and Shari, preceded her in death. Memorial donations can be made to Mayo Clinic in Chloe's name
