30 January 1843 --- 13 September 1927

J. P. [John Paul] Byers, aged 84 years, a pioneer and resident of Wright county, for fifty-one years. He was a familiar character upon our streets, and will certainly be missed. He left to mourn his loss two sons and one daughter. He was one of the two surviving resident members of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Note: Byers was a member of Co. D, 27th IA Infantry, enlisting from Clayton county. He is buried in the Belmond cemetery.
