July 24, 1932 ---- October 12, 1997

Richard J. “Dick” Braunger, 65, of Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, October 12, 1997, at the Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center in Salem, Virginia, following a lengthy illness. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Joseph Dillinger officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Braunger was born July 24, 1932 in Sioux City, the son of John and Genevieve (Bell) Braunger. He attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary and Trinity High School, graduating from Heelan High School in 1950. He later attended the University of South Dakota. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and later in the Iowa National Guard.

He was employed in the finance and banking business, having held positions at Securities Acceptance Corp. in South Sioux City, Center Loan Company in Omaha, Nebraska, Siouxland Credit Corp. in Wayne, Nebraska, Mid-State Finance Company in Clarion, Iowa, Princeton State Bank in Princeton, Minnesota and First Union Corp. in Roanoke, Virginia. In 1990, he was employed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farmers’ Home Administration. He was also employed by the American Association of Retired Persons in Roanoke and ProtoCall, a pharmaceutical sales company.

He had been an officer or member of numerous community organizations, including the Lion’s Club, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Chamber of Commerce, and the Jaycees.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey R. of Arlington, Virginia and Greg of Northglenn, Colorado, a daughter and her husband, Cheryl and Brian Wunderlich of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, two grandchildren, Lyndsey and Jared, and a sister and her husband, Caryl and Dick Sudtelgte of Sioux City. He was preceded in death by his parents, two children, Mary and Joseph and a brother, Robert Braunger. Pallbearers will be Paul Maurer, Dick and Keith Sudtelgte, Brian Wunderlich, Paul and Anthony Braunger.
