Timothy Craig Smith, 65, of Des Moines, died at home on Sunday, April 1, 2018. He was born August 11, 1952 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Ellwyn and Marilyn [Barrett] Smith. Tim attended college at Iowa State University, ultimately graduating from the University of Northern Iowa, but it was during his high school years in Norwalk that he met a special group of people who would become his lifelong friends.

After finishing his education, he went on to establish a successful career in sales, with a focus on the gift shop industry. His basement was always overflowing with sample products and he kept an endless supply of atomic fireballs, making his house a favorite place for friends and family to visit.

Tim was a huge fan of college sports, especially the University of Iowa and UNI teams. He was also an avid golfer, spending many mornings on the golf course with his friends...and many afternoons in the pro shop replacing whichever golf club he had thrown into the water hazard that day!

He was generous to a fault and whether you were moving across town or building a deck, he was always available to help. Tim loved his friends and family, not least of all his son Matt who was a constant source of great pride.

Tim provided endless entertainment at family get-togethers and the sound of his laughter will echo in our hearts for years to come. He will be very deeply missed by those fortunate enough to have known him.

He is survived by his son, Matt (Elizabeth) Rowles; grandson, Max Rowles; sisters, Liz (Denny) Maach and Melinda (Todd) Pearson. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marilyn Hrubes and Ellwyn “Bus” Smith; stepfather, George Hrubes; sister, Lisa Hess; brother-in-law, Joel Hess and nephew, Tony Friedley.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm, Friday, April 13 at Iles Westover Funeral Chapel, where family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. Ashes will be scattered at a later date. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to The Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
