Carroll Block of Thompson, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at the Sheffield Care Center, at age 91. Carroll was born May 18, 1926, on a farm near Renwick, Iowa, to parents Clause and Anna Marie (Ramm) Block. He graduated from Renwick High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II until May, 1946. During that time he served on an escort carrier, the USS Commencement Bay. After the service he attended the University of Iowa and graduated from the College of Dentistry in 1952.

On June, 14, 1952, he married Janice Marie Welty in Pandora, Ohio. This past year they celebrated 65 years of marriage. They moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1952, where he completed an internship at the Strong-Carter Dental Clinic for Children. They move to Thompson, Iowa, and maintained a dental practice from 1953 to 1993. He served as a dentist at the Ft. Hood Army Base in Killeen, Texas, three more years.

He sought to maintain parks and wildlife for future generations. He was a founding member of the Winnebago County Conservation Board and also served on the State Conservation Board. Winnebago County named the C.A. Block Wildlife Area in his honor. He enjoyed time spending time at his farm on the Cedar River hunting and fishing. He donated a section of land known as the Cedar Block Wild Life Area.

He served on the North Iowa Area Community College Board of Directors. He served on the rescue squad in Thompson, Thompson Library Board, as well as other community organizations. He received the "Giving Your Best Award" from KIMT 3 News. He enjoyed woodworking projects making many items for friends and family.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Renwick, Iowa. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa and served in many roles.

He is survived by his wife, Janice (Welty) Block, daughter Laurie (Rick) DeGroot, son Dan (Laura) Block, sister Eva (Howard) Steiner, brother Dr. Kenneth (Marybelle) Block, grandchildren David, Thomas and AnnaMarie Block, Andrea (Rick) Kohler, Janna (Charlie) Dickman, great-grandchildren Preslee, Max, and Fynlee Dickman, Isla, Kaia and Autumn Kohler. He was preceded in death by his parents Claus and Anna (Ramm) Block, brothers Clem (Lois Katherine, Ruth) Block, Claus Arnold (Ivy) Block, Merrill (Ruth) Block, sisters Florence Block, Myrtle (Jay) Block, Connie (Roger) Gillespie, son Jamie Block.

A memorial service organized by Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church on February 20 at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church before the service starting at 1:00 p.m. The family thanks many friends, family, Bethany Lutheran Church and staff at Sheffield Care Center/Deerfield Assisted Living for their support and care. Memorial donations will be shared with the community and church. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, Iowa.
