Joyce Dorthy Narland was born on December 13, 1917, in Radcliffe, Iowa, to Alfred and Julia Eittreim Narland. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, graduating from Radcliffe High School in 1935. She graduated from Waldorf College in 1939 and taught school in rural Radcliffe, Dumont, Iowa, and Goldfield, Iowa. She was united in marriage with Norris D. Olson on June 25, 1941, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe. They farmed the family farm near Eagle Grove, Iowa, where they lived until moving to Story City, Iowa, in 1992. Her husband died on June 8, 1997. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove, teaching children, youth and adult Sunday, school, and confirmation classes; She held Local, District and National offices of the American Lutheran Church Women. In later years, they were associate members of St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. She was an active community member and served on the election board, Band Boosters, community organizations, and helped with community fund drives.

Joyce D. Olson died Saturday, September 4, 1999, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 81. She is survived by four children, a daughter, Carmen Joyce Peter, and husband, Leonard, Story City, a son, Stanley Norris Olson, and wife, Nancy, Redwood Falls, Minn., a daughter, Julia Ann Wentz, and husband, Chris Simoni, Chicago, Ill., a son, Kent David Olson, and wife, Linda, St. Paul, Minn; a brother, Kenneth Narland, Grover Beach, Calif.; a sister, Maxine Madson, St. Paul, Minn; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norris; one brother, Eugene Narland; an infant sister, Marguerite Narland; and a son-in-law, John Wentz.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 6, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Reverends Paul and Susan Stone officiating. Burial was held in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
