Alvin C. Halfpap, 83, Boone, died February 27, 2018 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3 at First United Methodist Church in Boone. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone.

Al "Bunny" was born April 12, 1934 in Belmond to Alvin and Fannie (Bruns) Halfpap. He was a 1952 graduate of Belmond High School. He worked with the Chicago Great Western Railroad from 1954-1956, then served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1956-1958. He was honorably discharged the day Elvis arrived. He began working for the Chicago Great Western, Chicago Northwestern and Union Pacific Railroads as a dispatcher, retiring in 1994.

In 1961 Al married Kathryn Kaye Thompson in Nora Springs. They resided in Oelwein where children Tom and Carrie were born. Railroad transfers led him to Mason City, Boone and Chicago. Kaye died away in 1992. Al married Mary Johnston in 1995, and they resided in Boone.

Al loved antique cars and was an avid race fan, especially watching sprint cars in Knoxville with son Tom. He was a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club of America (Central Iowa Region), Antique Auto Club of America (Tall Corn Region) and First United Methodist.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Kaye; and sister Dorothy. Those left to honor Al's memory include his wife Mary Johnston; children Tom (Deb and Patience) Halfpap of Mason City and Carrie (Jack) Topp of Newton; step-children Nancy (Dave) Clawson of Panora, David (Nancy) Johnston of Cottage Grove, MN, Sue (Tim) Fried of Lino Lakes, MN, and John (Linda) Johnston of White Bear Lake, MN; 12 step-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist of Boone, Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, or the Boone Area Humane Society.
