He was a faithful employee of the Chicago Northwestern Railway for 48 years. In South Dakota, Mr. McDermott was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Name society, and was prominent in all church activities.

A lasting and final tribute was given him by the Very Rev. Wm. J. McLaughlin, O. P., who described him as a devout man, who not only believed, but also lived to exemplify the teachings of the Holy Catholic church, and no more beautiful farewell was ever given to any man.
