Harry Archiebald "Archie" Lalor was born on August 6, 1917, the son of Harry and Anna Mae Donaldson Lalor at Eagle Grove. He received his education in the Eagle Grove school system, and graduated from the Eagle Grove High School in 1935. Following his education, he was employed in construction with his father. He joined the Eagle Grove Fire Department in 1939.

He enlisted in the U.S. army on April 25, 1941. He served in the European Theater from January 1942, until September of 1945. He was in the first convoy to the European Theater during World War II. He received his honorable discharge on October 2, 1945.

While in the service, Lalor met Dorothy Dibble of Youngstown, Ohio, while serving in the same Army hospital unit. The couple was later married on September 26, 1946 at Youngstown. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove. He was employed in his father's construction business until his father's retirement in 1955. He took over and ran the business until his retirement in 1983, when his son, Gary, took over the business. Mr. Lalor remained active through raising his horses and farming the family acreage.

Lalor rejoined the Eagle Grove Fire Department upon his return from the service and was first elected chief in 1948. He continued as chief until his death. He was a longtime member of the Wright County Firemen's Association and the Iowa Fire Chiefs Association.

The family raised and showed horses for many years. He was involved with the Midwest Appaloosa Horse Association, and served as president from 1960 to 1964. He continued to judge horse shows until 1983. He was superintendent of horse shows for the Wright County Fair for 20 years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eagle Grove and the American Legion.

Harry Archiebald Lalor died at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, April 10, 1993, at the age of 75 years, eight months, and four days. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth and Donald. He is survived by his wife; two sons, James of Mason City, and Gary of Eagle Grove; one daughter, Mrs. William (Linda) Benedict of Fort Dodge; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Eileen Larson of Eagle Grove, Lillian Stokes of Atlanta, Ga., and Doris Jensen of Normal, Ill.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) April 14, at 1:30 p.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove, with the Rev. H. W. Schiller officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
