SHEFFIELD, Iowa --- Pauline Peter passed away February 6, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, at Zion St. John Lutheran Church, Sheffield, with Rev. G. Kim Wills presiding. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday at Zion St. John Lutheran Church, 416 Sherman Street, Sheffield. Retz Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Pauline Annette Wearda Peter was born December 18, 1936, in Hampton, Iowa to Paul and Anna (Behn) Wearda. She grew up on farms near Clarion, Chapin and Sheffield. Pauline was active in band, basketball and 4-H while in high school. She was selected to All State Basketball honorable mention twice and was Iowa State Champion Poultry judge. Pauline was selected to attend the National 4-H Congress and made the trip to Chicago. She graduated high school in 1954.

Pauline married Dean Peter on May 29, 1954 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together they farmed for 40 years west of Sheffield. They retired in 1999 and moved to their home in Sheffield where each morning they took a 2 mile walk around town and then rode bikes down the trail.

Pauline and Dean loved to go fishing in Minnesota, Clear Lake, the Ozarks and Canada. They trained and rode in 5 RAGBRAI's. Pauline found homes for them to stay in each night of the ride. The year RAGBRAI went through Sheffield, RAGBRAI's official pie judge, chose Pauline's black raspberry pie as the best on RAGBRAI. Pauline and Dean trained and ran 5K races; Pauline did a few 10Ks.

Family was important to Pauline and she cherished spending time with them playing cards, board games, fishing at the cabin or pond, watching them play high school and college sports, and sitting around the table sharing stories.

Pauline was devoted to her church. She served in leadership roles as Council President, Fellowship Councilor, and Treasurer. She also volunteered to help with other church activities. Pauline was a 4-H leader, Hospice volunteer, Wednesday quilters at church bridge club and a Tri-S member.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 63 years: Dean; children: Darryl (Dee) Peter, Sheffield, Iowa; Terry (Vicky) Peter, Ankeny, Iowa; Becky (Ron) Marlow, Pella, Iowa; Randy (Peggy) Peter, Grey Eagle, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren: Michelle (Chris) Goodwin; Neal (Heidi) Peter; Mackenzie (Adam) Davison; Mandy (Justin) Vogel; Laura (Kent) Patterson; Tammy (Rob) Simms; Kelli (Matt) Jens; Jena (Tyler) Beerends; Joe (Sabrina) Peter, Jaynie (Kenton) Huyser; and 26 great grandchildren; siblings: Don (Jan) Wearda; Irene (Ken) Jaspersen; Denise (Dean) Hogan and Donna (Jim) Sogard. Pauline is preceded in death by her parents and infant granddaughter Katie Ann Peter, daughter of Terry and Vicky Peter.
