Maynard M. Thompson, the original Iowa cowboy, died peacefully January 26, 2018 in Sierra Vista, AZ. Born February 5, 1926, in Eagle Grove, IA to Martin and Louise Thompson. Maynard grew up on the family farm and graduated high school in 1944. The day after graduating, Maynard reported for military service. He served in the Army in Germany and was held as a POW until V-E Day.
Maynard returned to Iowa where he earned a B.A. in business from Buena Vista College in 1950. He taught high school, then went to work in the insurance industry. In 1957, he married the love of his life, Doris Ten Haken. In 1971, Maynard moved his family to Phoenix, AZ to open an office for Merchants Bonding Company. He fell in love with the mountains and deserts and never tired of driving Midwest visitors up South Mountain to admire the lights of Phoenix. In retirement, Maynard and his beloved Doris took countless road trips around the US to visit friends and family. They lived for years in Sun City and were active members of Peace Lutheran Church in Peoria, AZ and the Agua Fria chapter of the Ex-POW Association.
Maynard was preceded in death by his wife Doris and is survived by son Martin of Denver; daughter Pamela, son-in-law Matt Fredrickson, and grandson Gus Fredrickson, all of Bisbee; and brother Robert Thompson of Storm Lake, Iowa.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, February 16th at the National Memorial Cemetery, 23029 Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, AZ, with a memorial service at 1:00 P.M. at Peace Lutheran Church, 18265 N. 89th Ave., Peoria, AZ.
