Marjorie Gruis, age 88, passed away at Iowa Specialty Hospital-Belmond, IA on January 10, 2018. Visitation will be Saturday January 20, 2018 from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Reformed Church-Belmond, IA. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

Marjorie E. Gruis was born on Mary 29, 1929, the youngest of four children born to Herman and Harmke (Braner) Gruis. Marjorie was born on the Gruis homestead near Meservey, Iowa. She attended grade school in Meservey and graduated from Meservey High School in 1946 as valedictorian of her class. That fall Marjorie attended Central College in Pella, Iowa. In the spring of 1947 she received her teaching certificate which enabled her to teach the country school (kindergarten through eighth grade) that was one mile from her home. Marjorie taught country school from 1947 to 1950. Marjorie then took a bookkeeping job at Mussel Chevrolet in Belmond. To prepare herself for her next job, she took a shorthand course from the Hamilton Business College in Mason City. From 1952 to 1958 Marjorie was a secretary and bookkeeper for Courson & McNeal Farm Management and Real Estate Agency in Belmond. Marjorie had taken care of her father’s bookkeeping since the age of 16 so she enjoyed her jobs as a bookkeeper.

Marjorie is survived by her sister, Hildegarde Pals; two nieces and two nephews. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, Herman B. Gruis in 1968 and Harmke Gruis in 1973; her brother Harvey in 1968 and sister-in-law Jean Gruis; her sister Florence Pals in 1989 and brother-in-law Lambert; and her brother-in-law Ormal Pals.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Immanuel Reformed Church, the Belmond Community Hospital Foundation, or the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
