August 1, 1925 --- December 19, 2017

Robert "Bob" Cullinan, age 92, died December 19, 2017, at his home in rural Belmond surrounded by his wife and family. A Celebration of Life will be held January 27, 2018, at Cattleman's at The Club, in Belmond, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. with a tribute service and sharing of memories at 3:00 p.m.

Robert Charles Cullinan, the son of John Samuel and Bessie (Quam) Cullinan, was born on his parent's farm in Lisbon, North Dakota, on August 1, 1925. As a young child, he moved with his family to Clarion, Iowa. Bob attended Clarion schools before enlisting in the United States Armed Forces near the end of WWII where he trained as a pilot. Following WWII, as a member of the reserves, he was called back to serve his country during the Korean Conflict.

Bob married the love of his life, Phyllis Aileen Braner, May 20, 1950, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and they were nearly inseparable for over 67 years. They settled in rural Belmond and were blessed with six children, Robert Jr., Jim, Mark, Denise, Debra and David. Bob worked for the railroad, Iowa Light and Power, and many years for the US Postal Service in Belmond. However, he was a farmer to his core. Bob had a special connection to the land and a love of horses which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He truly appreciated the simple joys that life brought him over his 92-year journey, especially the annual Cullinan family vacation held every year over his birthday for the past 32 years.

Bob will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him as a family man. Bob's memory will burn brightly in the hearts of his wife, Phyllis; son Robert (Cathy) Cullinan, Jr., Belmond, IA, their children Darren (Stephanie), St. Louis, MO, Shelley (Nick) Bartz and their daughters Emme and Eden, Johnston, IA, and Molly (Fiancée Brandon Potter), Davenport, IA; son Mark Cullinan, Belmond, IA; daughter Denise (Jerry) Marifke, Stamford, CT; daughter Debra (Duane) Willhite, Denver, IA and their children Collin (Ashley) Willhite and their sons Rilen and Cal, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Evan Willhite, Marion, IA; and son David (Susan) Cullinan and their children, Zane, Macyn, and Nash, Fall Creek, WI. Sister-in-law, Erma Cullinan, Clarion, IA. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bessie; son, Jim Cullinan; grandson, Travis Cullinan; sisters, Alice, Ruth, Bess, Mary, and Shirley; and brothers, John, Clair, Dale and Dick. Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in Bob's memory are encouraged to do something kind for a friend or neighbor or consider a donation to the Iowa Specialty Hospital Foundation-Belmond.
