5 June 1866 ---- 10 May 1909

Hattie Melinda Lucas was born at Lykens, Penn. In the year 1866 and died at her home in this city on So. Cadwell Ave. May 10, 1909, aged 43 years. On October 8, 1895 she was united in marriage to F. H. Holton, the ceremony being performed at Carroll, Ia. by her old pastor who confirmed her in the Lutheran church, Rev. J. A. Wirt of Des Moines, since deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Holton lived in Carroll two years and then moved to Elmore, Minnesota where they lived until they moved to Eagle Grove about three years ago. In this city she united with the Congregational church and became a member of the order of Eastern Star, and of the ladies auxiliary to the O. R.C. In all these relations of church, society and home she was generous and loyal. In her death the church loses an earnest, faithful member, the societies a generous, ideal sister, and the home an affectionate wife, and a tender, loving mother.

While health permitted she was active in all the duties coming from these relations, and her memory is sweet and fragrant with unselfishness, kindness and charity with all with whom she was ever associated.

She is survived by her husband and two daughters, Jeanette the older, and Miss Verda, aged eight years. Her father of Eagle Grove, a sister, Mrs. Nolen of Oregon, a sister, Mrs. Ely, and a brother of Harrisburg, Penn. also survive to mourn her untimely taking away.

Floral tributes by societies and friends were profuse and beautiful with perfumed voice speaking love's tribute a life of purity and sweetness.

The funeral was held Thursday 2:30 p. m. at the home. Rev. Dr. York conducting the services. At the home the Ladies Auxiliary of the O. R. C. conducted the beautiful ceremony of their ritual; at the grave the Order of the Eastern Star paid its last tribute with tearful farewell. The interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Among the relatives and friends here from abroad to attend the funeral were Mrs. Wm. Farber of Geneseo, Ill., a sister of Mr. Holton, and husband; Mrs. H. H. Nolen of Pendleton, Oregon, a sister of Mrs. Holton and husband; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Holt, and Mrs. Elliot Mason of Elmore, Minn.

In this great bereavement the family and relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire city.
