Matthew Sadler, the son of Henry and Susan Thielen Sadler, was born on a farm near Eagle Grove, Iowa on January 30, 1902. He grew up and received his education in the rural schools of the Eagle Grove area. On Sept. 17, 1929, he was united in marriage with Irene Culmer at Eagle Grove. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove, where Matt was a cabinet maker and carpenter. He was associated with his sons and worked with them in the Sadler Construction Company in Eagle Grove for many years. He was a long time member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He died in Eagle Grove on Saturday night, Sept. 17, 1983 at the age of 81 years, seven months and 20 days, after suffering an apparent heart attack.

He is survived by his wife, Irene of Eagle Grove; his sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Mary Sadler and Larry and Marilyn Sadler, all of Eagle Grove, 10 grandchildren: Michael Sadler; Nancy, Mrs. Dennis Vandewater; Maria Sadler; Teresa Sadler; David Sadler; Timothy Sadler; Mitchell Sadler; Susan Sadler; and Kari Sadler all of Eagle Grove and Amy, Mrs. Richard Kuns of Clear Lake; eight great-grandchildren: Amelia Sadler, Alison Sadler, Trisha Vandewater, Justin Vandewater, Haley Jean Vandewater, Brent Sadler, Rachel Kuns and Natalie Kuns; three brothers, Frank Sadler of Eagle Grove, Lawrence Sadler of Humboldt and Nickolas of Fort Dodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Peter, Raymond, Charles, and Leo Sadler.

Funeral services for Matt Sadler, 81, of Eagle Grove, were held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1983 at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove, Rev. Fr. John Hemann, church pastor, officiated and burial was in the family lot at Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation was held at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. on Monday and at the Sacred Heart Parish Center from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday evening with the parish Rosary service being held at the parish center at 8 p.m. with an Honor Guard of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus present.
