Richard Dean Sampson, the son of Harold and Esther (Brandt) Sampson, was born on May 27, 1948, in Jewell, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Jewell – and graduated from Jewell High School in 1966. Richard served in the United States Navy from January 23, 1967, until his Honorable Discharge on December 7, 1972. On January 9, 1975, Richard married Mary Cram in Quincy, Ill. They made their home in Hubbard and Fort Dodge, Iowa, Sapulpa, Okla., and moved to Eagle Grove 16 years ago. Richard owned and operated Action Roofing in Hubbard and Fort Dodge. Richard enjoyed fishing and Sudoku, but his true passion in life were his children and grandchildren. He loved playing board games and cards. He enjoyed singing to them, reading books, and making them laugh. He will forever be their PaPa.

Richard passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2017, at Mercy Medical in Des Moines at the age of 69 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Esther Sampson; and sister, Lois Bergman. Survivors include his wife, Mary Sampson, of Eagle Grove; children: Kimberly Bonnell (Andrew) of Marion, Brian Sampson (Ty Ty) of Fort Dodge, Brett Sampson, and Jennifer Benage; nine grandchildren: Tiara Paul, Madison Mitchell, Tyler Mitchell, Taryn Thompson, Cody Schultz, Cequoyah Sampson, Chloe and Clara Benage, Kami Taylor and Tranden Sampson; great-grandchild, Tinsley Paul; and brothers, Harley and David Sampson of Lee Summit, Mo.

Visitation was held Friday, Nov. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
