David James Larson, 75, of Ames, died at Mary Greeley Hospital on Tuesday, November 14, 2017. A celebration of his life and a burial of cremated remains will be held in the spring of 2018.

David Larson was born on November 11, 1942 in Riverside, California to Merle and Marjorie (LaBounty) Larson. He graduated from Kanawha High School in Kanawha, IA in 1960. He continued with his education at Iowa State University earning his Bachelor Degree in 1964 and his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1968. He then obtained his Masters of Science degree in 1975 from the University of Missouri. David worked as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, specializing in Veterinary Pathology for Iowa State University until his retirement in 2004.

David met his wife Kathleen Kielusiak in Minneapolis, MN. They were married November 7, of 1970. Their daughter, Laura, was born in 1974 in Columbia, Missouri. David enjoyed his time traveling with Kathleen chasing down historical sites, and fishing and hiking at Gunflint Lake in Minnesota where the family spent summers. David was an avid reader with a thirst for history - knowledge which resulted in numerous wins at Trivial Pursuit through the years. He was a very attentive and caring person and was devoted to his friends and family. He had a sense of humor that would brighten up the room. He was a member of the 500 Card Club, a local Gourmet Group, the Ames Anglers and the Gunflint Trail Historical Society.

David is survived by his wife; Kathleen Larson, daughter; Laura Schafbuch, granddaughters; Madelyn and Rachel Schafbuch, brother; Michael (Judith) Larson of Kanawha, Iowa, sister; Terryl (Michael) Hyzer of West Des Moines, Iowa, and ten nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Merle and Marjorie (LaBounty) Larson.

Memorial contributions may be made in David's name to the Gunflint Trail Historical Society: 28 Moose Pond Dr., Grand Marais, MN.
