Funeral services for Guy A. Hinkley will be held today (Thursday) in the Chapel on the Hill at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge. Mr. Hinkley died about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday January 14th in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Dodge, where he had been a patient for about 10 days. Two services will be held in the Chapel on the Hill for Mr. Hinkley, the first at 9:30 a.m. for the residents of the Home and the second at 10:30 a.m. for family and friends. Rev. Clarence Tompkins will be in charge of the services assisted by Rev. Donald Forbes of the Eagle Grove Methodist church. Rev. Tompkins is the director of Friendship Haven and a former Eagle Grove Methodist Minister. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Eagle Grove.

Mr. Hinkley is survived by two daughters, Mrs. E. C. Johnson and Mrs. Burdette Middleton of Eagle Grove and one son, David, of Carmel, California who will be here for the funeral. Also seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive, his father and mother, one sister and two brothers.

Mr. Hinkley came to Eagle Grove and opened a clothing store in partnership with John Leuthold in March of 1913. He continued to operate the Eagle Grove store until his retirement in 1949. During his active business career he expanded his store holdings until he was a partner with the Leutholds in some 6 or 7 stores in Iowa and Minnesota.

In addition to his busy life as a clothing merchant and store operator he was active in many community programs. He was a charter member and past president of the Eagle Grove Rotary club. He was a 60 year Mason, 50 year Shriner, 50 year member of Eastern Star and a 65 year member of I.O.O.F. He was also a long time member and past president of the Eagle Grove Chamber of Commerce, known then as the Commercial Club.

He was also very active in the Eagle Grove Methodist church, a member of the official board and of the building committee which built the present church. He was also a participant in the burning of the mortgage of the church.

Mr. Hinkley was also an avid sportsman concentrating mostly on duck hunting. He had a lodge in South Dakota which he purchased in 1900. He was honored in 1950 by the South Dakota Conversation Commission on the purchase of his fiftieth annual hunting license. He made annual trips to South Dakota, his last being in June of 1968. Poor health made his regular fall trip this year impossible.

Hundreds of men, young and old in this vicinity, will remember Mr. Hinkley for kind deeds which he performed without general public knowledge. It is impossible to estimate how many young men were able to wear new suits to high school and college graduations through the good will of Mr. Hinkley. Some paid him off by 25 cents a week and others never paid.

He was also the most used "recommender" in the community. If a young man needed a reference he nearly always gave Mr. Hinkley's name as one reference.

When Friendship Haven was first proposed, Mr. Hinkley was an enthusiastic supporter. Retired at the time, he worked for long hours and several years helping the organization and raising money for the project. Later to become resident of the home with Mrs. Hinkley he continued his interest and active support of the project. Friendship Haven is a monument to Mr. Hinkley's interest and talents.

Poor health came to Mr. Hinkley early in October. After being in the hospital for observation and treatment he was returned to the Health Center at Friendship Haven for several weeks. It was then decided an operation should be performed and he returned to the Lutheran hospital where his condition worsened bringing his death on Tuesday morning.
