May 22, 1917 ---- July 9, 2014
Jamie Morris Paine passed away on July 9, 2014 at the age of 97. He was born on May 22, 1917 to Morris and Henrietta (Kennedy) Paine, the third of nine children, on the family farm at Eagle Grove, Iowa. While still a young boy, he moved with his family to Ree Heights, SD, where he grew up and attended high school. He was Valedictorian of his graduating class, in addition to being captain of both the football and basketball teams. After high school, his family moved to Wenatchee, WA where his father worked as an auto mechanic. Jamie set off on his own and found work in Los Angeles in the aircraft industry. That is where he met the love of his life, Katherine Stewart, and they married in 1941.
Jamie joined the service as an Army Air Corps pilot and Katherine stayed behind working at an aircraft assembly plant. After the war, they settled in Albuquerque, NM where he owned and operated a car dealership, Jimmy's Used Cars.
In 1959, the family, now with three children, moved to California for better economic and educational opportunities. Jamie retired from the car business in 1979, after culminating his sales career with several years at Beverly Hills Auto Imports. He was very well-respected in his field and extremely service-oriented. He developed a strong base of loyal customers who followed him in his career, regardless of what make of car he was selling at the particular time.
Jamie and Katherine retired to the Salem area in 1979 to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening, home projects (including a wrap-around deck, carport and finished second story), golf and was an avid 2-mile a day walker as long as he was able. Jamie's family was very important to him--he was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and was a gentleman in every way. He and Katherine provided a loving home and worked very hard to provide opportunities they did not have growing up during the Depression and living through World War II, including university educations for all three children.
Katherine passed away in 1995, after 54 years of marriage. Jamie is also predeceased by his mother and father, brothers Kermit, Marion "Svens", Bob, Harry and Paul, and sisters Elsie Tidball, Helen Gardner and Mary Lodge. He is survived by his children Mary (Michael) Russell of Salem, Peggy Paine of Columbus, GA and David (Daniel) Paine of Salt Spring Island, BC, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
At Jamie's request, there will be no services except a private family scattering of his ashes on the Oregon Coast, which he and Katherine loved. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
The family gives their love to the incredible staff at Farmington Square, his home for the last six years, as well as to the wonderful Hospice crew that helped him and our family through this difficult transition.
